You know already that the musical editing applications do not work with sound or music directly. They work with special MIDI commands which are stored in MIDI-files and, eventually, are numbers. These numbers can be transformed with the help of different processing algorithms. Algorithms can be very complicated. But if many operations should be performed for realization of an algorithm, it is not a problem. Computer will manage to do it because its speed is ten thousand times higher than MIDI-interface data transfer speed. Thus, working with MIDI-commands, we have possibility to process them in real time. The question is what aims we should reach when creating processing algorithms. Naturally, the developers of musical software create such subroutines which bring the compelling results, and the user will use them rather often. Some MIDI-commands processing subroutines for user look like editing functions (copying, cutting, pasting, quantization etc.), other – like MIDI-effects. Some operations happen to be both among MIDI-effects and editing functions. MIDI-effects can be used in real time and eponymous editing functions – only in MIDI data calculation regime.

Sonar application gaining more and more popularity these days has the following MIDI-effects: MIDI-arpeggiator, analysis and identification of accords, echo imitation, MIDI-filtering, quantization, percussion part forming, notes transposition, notes volume level. Besides there are effects which are not included in Cakewalk Sonar but exist as separate plug-ins.

Sound potential of today’s musical computers are considerably superior to symphonic orchestra. But it is extremely difficult to take advantage of this potential by means of ordinary computer methods of synthesis management. Expressiveness of electronic music no matter performed by you on a synthesizer or is stored in a computer MIDI-sequencer cannot be compared to live performance. Even when using the best electronic equipment, nobody can play more convincing than a virtuoso performing a violin solo. This fact is often used as an argument when computer music is called soulless. No wonder numerous attempts to create applications which would ‘bring life’ into perfect but, at the same time, dead MIDI-music, are taken.

It is not easy to simulate the process of music creation but it is possible because any musician plays by the rules based on the ages of musical experience though he is not always aware of it.
